Several United States officials and military men have been killed across the Middle East this week, as US embassies and military bases have been targeted and attacked by a number of Arab protesting groups.
A British air base in Afghanistan (not just any, either; the UK's Prince Harry, third in line to the throne, is currently stationed there) was attacked today, resulting in the deaths of two American Marines and the wounding of several other soldiers.
Earlier this week, the United States Ambassador to Libya was murdered, along with several other officials. Riots are ensuing across an estimated 15-20 countries throughout the troubled area of the globe. Many deaths and injuries have been reported in places like Libya, Afghanistan, Egypt, Tunisia, Syria, and more. In one instance, protesters replaced an American flag with that of a black Islamic one.
The United States and other coalition forces have begun to deploy more forces to defend these attacks, as several US fleets of warships have been heading over this week. The mission is unclear at this point; President Obama claims that all acts will be punished, but he has yet to discuss what the military will be doing.
It is assumed that until there is a further announcement of the plan, it will be simply defense.
As if these attacks and riots weren't already enough, tensions are at an all time high between Israel and Iran in the meantime. Some experts believe that Israel will launch an air attack on Iran (or perhaps vice versa) as soon as the end of this year. The United States has mostly reassured that Israel is a close friend and ally and will be supported, though the idea of a war with Iran is not a favorable one to the US, nor any other UN member at this point. It is the common goal of many of these nations to do whatever necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons of mass destruction, though the Iranians are believed to have been inching closer to achieving that, and with Israel as their number one target, the country might go on the offense if it means stopping Iran.
